Tanaïl's convent
The convent at Tanaïl is part of the Jesus Company, in the middle eastern province, which is an international religious order . It has been hosting and organizing educational and spiritual activities since the arrival of the Jesuit fathers end of XIXe century. Reintegration, education and work are key values defended by the Jesuits. Through this perspective, the convent directs a complementary, academic school and a technical institution, as well as a secondary and a higher learning institutions (BT & TS) at Tanaïl. Two more primary schools are directed as well at Taalabaya and Jdita, in collaboration with the Saints-Coeurs sisters.
True spiritual haven, the convent welcomes retreatants (priests, religious seminarians, couples, young ladies and gentlemen), while guaranteeing a contemplation atmosphere and an individual spiritual accompaniment. During these retreats, time is provided for meditation on the Gospel, Eucharist, and personal prayer. Pastoral and catechismic animations are organized as well as an accompaniment of Christian Life Community (CLC). Spiritual recollections and retreats are arranged according to the Ignatius method.
The story of Notre-Dame of Consolata
This painting has given its name to the chapel which is found in the convent. It is a copy of an original painting venerated since middle ages in Turin - Italy. In 1851 an Italian Jesuit priest, carried the image from Turin to Algiers, where it became famous for the blessings and miracles it brought along. In 1881, when the French government shut down the Jesuits convents in France and Algeria, a Jesuit priest brought the painting to the Tanaïl convent. This painting gave the monastery church and the Jdita fathers’ school their namesake. Then, during the First World War, It would be sent to Damascus for safe keeping, after which the painting was returned to Tanaïl.
A Latin text written on the back of the painting tells the story of this piece. Look for the text in the sacristy of the of Notre-Dame de la Consolata church!
